About Indian Day Camp

Indian Acres Day Camp

Why choose Indian Acres Day Camp? – Our Indian Day Camp is a long-standing Champaign-Urbana tradition for our community’s youth.  The camp was created by founder, Al Klingle, lovingly known as Big Chief Al, in the 1940s. The Club was built and Day Camp relocated to 1 Arrow Rd in 1959 and we’ve been blessed to continue providing a safe, family-centered place to spend your summers.  Thank you for considering Indian Acres Day Camp.  We hope you love your time here as much as we do.

Looking for an all day option? – We now offer extended day until 3:15PM, M-F. You must be registered in our morning day camp to utilize this service.

For any campers enrolled in 8 & Under Swim Team or noon lessons, we will ensure their attendance in all registered activities.  Extended Day will be offered regardless of weather.

A Note from Our Directors: Abby Krows & David Presley

As Camp Director I couldn’t be more proud of the camp experience we provide at Indian Acres.

Campers participate in a variety of activities as part of their morning at day camp. We begin our day as a large group and after our traditional flag circle, break off into our separate age groups. Campers, dependent on their age, are playing classic games such as capture the flag, kick ball, and hide and seek. While our younger groups may be playing in the sandbox, playing bubbles, and sidewalk chalk!

One way we assure developmentally appropriate practices is to hire area school teachers to fill the roles as team leaders in our program. Several intended practices set our camp apart from other programs in the community, including standard of ratios for campers to counselors.  DCFS requires a 10:1 ratio for 3- and 4-year-olds and 20:1 for school age children. At Indian Acres our ratios are 4:1 for 3-and 4-year-olds; 5:1 for our 5- and 6-year-olds; and our 7-13 year old camper ratios are no more than 8:1.
We plan our themes based on our campers’ interests and incorporate guest speakers to enhance our day camper’s learning experiences.  Our activities vary each week dependent on our themes and our day campers always receive a daily swim lesson, recreational swim and a theme based craft as part of their morning routine.
Day Camp has been in existence since 1947, and even though times change our values and traditions at camp remain the same!

Listen to what others have to say about IA – Testimonials

[My kid] would never attempt a slide at a pool because of his lack of confidence in being able to swim. Thank you so much for turning my once-scared-to-swim-without-floaters into a confident swimmer in just one summer! I can’t wait to see the things he will do!! IA is the BEST!!

As a kid I spent many summers at Indian Acres as a camper and a member of the Swim Club.  Some of my most fond memories as a kid include my time spent at IA. When we moved back to Champaign 10 years ago, my family quickly joined Indian Acres not only for the phenomenal swim instruction and fun camp experiences, but also so my kids can create their own memories with family and friends that will last a lifetime.  We love our Indian Acres family!

[My daughter] began requesting IA specifically months ago! And she progressed further in swimming in a few weeks at your camp than in all the weekly swim lessons she’d had. Part of it was that she was ready—but I also think a large part is how you teach swimming and how wonderful and supportive your counselors are. Thank you!!

We are so thankful our kids had such a fun summer swim season with Indian Acres Swim Club! They have great friends and wonderfully supportive coaches!
